How to Install Cellular Shades

A Simple Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Installing Cellular Shades (also known as Honeycomb Shades) is quick and easy. With just a few basic tools, most homeowners can complete the installation in under 20 minutes—no professional help required.

This guide covers both Inside Mount and Outside Mount installations, with clear steps and visual references to make the process effortless.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Measuring tape

  • Pencil

  • Level

  • Drill or screwdriver

  • Screws (included)

  • Mounting brackets (included)

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Style

Before installing, confirm how your shades will be mounted.

Option A: Inside Mount

  • Installed inside the window frame

  • Clean, modern, built-in look

  • Requires sufficient window depth

Option B: Outside Mount

  • Installed above or outside the window frame

  • Better light coverage

  • Ideal for shallow windows or maximum privacy

Step 2: Measure and Mark Bracket Positions

For Inside Mount:

  1. Measure the inside width of the window frame

  2. Mark bracket positions at the top of the window frame, about 2–3 inches from each side

  3. Use a level to ensure alignment

For Outside Mount:

  1. Measure the shade width

  2. Mark bracket positions on the wall or trim above the window

  3. Ensure brackets are level and evenly spaced

Step 3: Install the Brackets

  • Drill pilot holes where marked

  • Secure brackets firmly using the provided screws

  • Double-check that brackets are level before proceeding

Step 4: Snap the Shade into Place

  1. Align the headrail with the installed brackets

  2. Push the headrail upward until it clicks securely into place

  3. Gently tug down to ensure it is locked in

Step 5: Test and Adjust

  • Raise and lower the shade several times

  • Ensure smooth, even movement

  • Adjust brackets slightly if needed

Installation Tips

  • Always measure twice before drilling

  • Use a level for perfect alignment

  • If installing multiple shades, install the center window first for reference
