How to Install Cellular Shades

This guide provides a general overview for installing a finished cellular shade. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact headrail, brackets, and control system. Installation requirements and time vary by product and mounting surface.

Before You Begin

  • Confirm that the shade, ordered size, mounting style, and control type match your order.
  • Check all supplied parts and read the product instructions before drilling. If parts or instructions are missing, contact us before proceeding.
  • For pre-order measurements, see our Cellular shade measurement guide. Ordering measurements are not cutting instructions; do not trim the delivered shade or alter its operating mechanism.
  • This article covers finished-shade installation. DIY shade assembly requires the instructions for your specific kit and hardware.

Tools and Parts

Prepare a measuring tape, pencil, level, suitable drill or screwdriver, and a stable step stool or ladder. Use the brackets specified for your shade and screws or anchors suitable for the mounting surface and shade weight. Supplied fasteners may not suit every surface.

Step 1: Confirm the Mounting Location

Inside mount: Check that the recess provides the depth and clearance required by your brackets and headrail. Allow space for handles and other obstructions so the shade can move freely.

Outside mount: Position the headrail according to your ordered shade size and planned coverage. Check the supporting surface and clearance around trim; do not use the window edges alone to determine bracket positions.

Step 2: Mark the Bracket Positions

Follow the bracket spacing, orientation, and support requirements supplied with your headrail. Keep brackets clear of control components and use any additional supports required for the shade. Use a level and mark the fixing holes. There is no single bracket spacing that applies to every cellular shade.

Step 3: Secure the Brackets

Check for concealed wiring or pipes before drilling. Drill and fit suitable fixings as required for the surface and product instructions. Secure every bracket and check that it is level and firmly supported. Seek qualified installation help if you are unsure about the mounting surface or fixing method.

Step 4: Attach the Headrail and Any Valance

Support the shade while engaging the headrail with every bracket, using the locking method specified for your hardware. Confirm that all brackets and locks are fully engaged before releasing the shade. Fit any included valance or cover according to its own instructions; attachment methods vary.

Step 5: Complete Control and Safety Setup

Control type varies by configuration. Cordless operation is available only where selected. Before operating the shade, install all safety and control components required for your exact system, including any specified tensioning or cord-retaining device, according to the supplied instructions. Keep cords out of children's reach.

For a motorized shade, follow the supplied instructions for power, pairing, and travel limits. Do not alter the mechanism or bypass safety components.

Step 6: Test and Check

Once the headrail is secure and all required control and safety components are installed, operate the shade using the instructions for your selected control type. Check that it raises and lowers smoothly and clears nearby obstructions. Stop using it if the headrail moves, the shade binds, or any component is loose. Correct the issue according to the product instructions or contact us before further use.
